Murky in the river section and parts of the main Dam, due to the influx of water from upstream
From Mpalane Bay, in front of Nkwazi Lake Lodge, Pump Station, the bay as you pass the KZN Wildlife campsites, Elephant Bay in 2 - 8m of water and towards the mouth of the river where it enters the main Dam. Please be careful of submerged structures in the water.
Tiger Fish caught during the month ranged from 1kg – 2.5kg
The largest one of 2.5kg was caught on sardine.
The Dam level has increased substantially since November due to the good rains received in the area and in the river catchment. It has been a quite a few years since we have seen the Dam at the current level. Let’s hope for continued good rains for the remainder of the rainy season!
Total Tiger Fish:
An average of 156 Tiger Fish were caught off the Pongola Game Reserve boats. Sardine was the bait of the month, but live bait, chicken livers and chicken hearts also worked well. Not as many Tiger Fish were caught compared to last month, but and average of 3-4 per trip were caught. Fisherman had plenty of runs but landing them proved a challenge.
A few Silver Catfish and Barbel were caught while fishing for Tiger Fish, using sardines and chicken livers.
Bait of the Month:
None. Due to the murky water the Tigers were feeding mainly by sense of smell.
The Dam and surrounds are looking truly spectacular as a result of the good rainy season, book now to avoid disappointment!
